Lake of the Ozarks and Bagnell Dam
.
Bagnell DamAs you stand atop one of the hills surrounding the Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri, gazing out over the 57,000 acres of water it is hard to believe that only 73 years ago it did not exist! Many are unaware that the Lake of the Ozarks is not a natural occurrence. It wasn't formed by glaciers like most lakes and rivers, but by people! On August 6, 1929 the Great Osage River Project began. Union Electric Company, which is now Ameren UE, enlisted the services of over 20,000 workers over a two year period to build the Bagnell Dam! On May 30, 1931 the Bagnell Dam was completed forming the largest man-made lake in the world at that time at 57,000 acres, stretching 92 miles with 1,150 miles of shoreline. The dam backed up the Osage River causing it to flood into the surrounding valleys and Lake of the Ozarks was born. The formation of the Lake of the Ozarks made a large change not only to the landscape, but also to the population and economy of the area. With all the economic and recreational opportunities, people began flooding in following the war looking for work, fun and just a beautiful place to live. Lake of the OzarksToday 12 cities and numerous small towns surround the lake. One of the most popular attractions was and is "the Strip". A long line of restaurants, shops, entertainment, carnival rides and games directly next to the dam. "The Strip" is still a favorite of locals and visitors today.
